Student Graduation Speech 2018

Student #1

There was a time when I wasn’t sure if I’d even be around to see this day. I can’t speak for the whole population of this school, but I do know that many others have felt the same way. And so, while I could spend this time thanking the many staff who have helped me get where I am today (like Zach, Scott Russell, Glenn, Sara and Jade), I’m choosing to talk to my peers.

To everyone who is graduating- today is for you. You can look at yourself in the mirror later tonight and know that you beat the odds that may have been stacked against you; whether it be unforgiving pasts, unfortunate experiences, or any person who told you you couldn’t do it. And yet, you did. YOU did it. There have been people who have helped you along, yes, but in the end, there’s you.

So, be proud of yourself, and forgive who you were. Because you succeeded, and it’s only up from here.

Today is the day that We all have dreamed about.I never thought I would ever graduate, but here I am.  When I first came to chamberlain I was a punk who would get in trouble with law constantly, partying and was very disrespectful. Today I can say that I am none of those things. Never did i think that I would be up here saying Chamberlain changed my life for the better. I made many mistakes here and there but If I didn’t come to chamberlain I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be who I am today and I know for fact I wouldn’t have gotten a diploma. Every single one these graduates worked so hard to get here. I never thought I would be up here giving a speech but dreams do come true and I can tell you all that things get better. I owe a big thank you to Scott Davignon who was a father figure to me while I was here, he helped me through everything and I wouldn’t have been able to do without him. also a big thank you to Zack, Debbie and Hannah. Most of all my absolutely best friend who showed me that you can change and you can get your life together & move on from your past, but also for never leaving my side, and  my family, my cousins The Hanley’s for being my entire world, but also a huge thank you to my other cousins who came all the way from Spain who have changed my life. Congratulations graduates and good luck!

I was undecided about speaking today for a while, especially considering all the changes the last few months have brought; but everything is always changing and that shouldn't stop me from saying what I want to.
When I got to chamberlain a little over 3 years ago, I didn't know what I was doing with my life, or even what I wanted to do with it. The idea of finishing high school seemed impossible, or at least more work than it was worth, but I came here because my family wanted to, and if that didn't work out, they’d at least understand how incapable I believed I was at the time.
I thought I’d hate it here. For a little while I did. Until I moved to Bedford and was given more freedom and challenges in my work. I joined the band elective, which kept me wanting to come to school everyday when I became a day student. But more than that, I became part of a community that I knew wasn't going to give up on me. And while you get out of this school what you put into it, it's really the people I’ve met that have made this place what it is to me, and made me want to succeed.
That being said, I have a few people to thank. First of all I’d like to thank my family for their never ending support and belief in me. I literally wouldn't be here without them and for that, I’m grateful.
I also want to thank Zach for being consistently amazing throughout my time here. I have never met someone so dedicated to their students well being. Since the beginning you’ve believed in me, you’ve advocated for me when I didn't know how, you taught me that it's not selfish to believe in yourself, and so much more, and those are lessons that I’ll remember for life, so thank you again.
I’d also like to thank Scott Russell, Debbie, Sherrie, Aimee, Glenn, Kim, Linda Mellow, Gina, and Liz for their support and just help, with everything.
Finally, I’d like to thank my friends for being such good friends to me, especially this past year.
It’s been a long 3 years but all in all I am so happy with where I am in my life now. And if I’ve learned anything it's that it doesn't matter what mistakes you make today, because you can still try again tomorrow.
Thank you
