On June 10th, seven Chamberlain students and three staff set forth on the trip of a lifetime to the island of Bermuda.  The group included Whitney G., Rob G., Peter F., Allegra R., Jen R. and Matt V. for students.  The students were chaperoned by Chamberlain staff members, Michelle Hunt, Scott Davignon and Barit White, R.N..  Everyone had high hopes of seeing exotic sea life and learning about their habitats.

The Chamberlain School offers this trip to Bermuda two times a year.  Those who participate in this trip, are exposed to various Ocean Study groups on campus before they leave and while in Bermuda. Read the rest of this entry »

This is an essay submitted by the young author’s teacher on his behalf post-graduation from Chamberlain School this last June.  It is a wonderfully written account from this young man of his journey to find personal meaning in his life through his studies and self-reflection.  He chooses a quote that attracts him and explores its meaning using logical reasoning and personal philosophy, ultimately arriving at how his own life reflects its meaning.  We are confident that you will enjoy taking this journey with him.

According to John Keats, “even a proverb is no proverb till your life has illustrated it.”  This is a seemingly simple thought that embodies a very deep and insightful truth.  Mere words, however well put, are meaningless to us until we choose to bring them to life through actions.  It is impossible to fully appreciate the moral implications of a proverb without first experiencing its message in your own life.

A few years ago I came across the quote, “Chaos often breeds life while order breeds habit.”  This was said by an American historian named Henry B. Adams.  In my opinion, this proverb refers to a concept that all life exists in one of two states: either order or chaos.  Order is a state of well being and complete stasis in which good and evil, right and wrong, or any other opposing forces cancel each other out to create some semblance of tranquility.  Order seems to be the desired state of being; but what progress toward an ulterior goal or advancement toward a productive future can come from an essentially frozen environment?  Order breeds nothing but habit; consistent, monotonous motion in no discernible direction.

A Chamberlain student of four years, Alex (Goldie), has been a shining example of a Chamberlain star with his positive contributions to his peers and our community. Many kids look to him for advice or mediation; Goldie’s efforts and wisdom have been greatly appreciated.

In his free time he enjoys utilizing his creative mind. Alex is very talented and skilled at drawing.  Usually his art is that of comic book heroes. Writing short stories is another hobby of his. Alex’s favorite activities include A. C. Moore, Borders, and the dome. One of his most memorable activities has been going to an actual Red Sox game.

Being at Chamberlain has helped numerous kids grow in different ways. Goldie noted that being at Chamberlain for four years has helped him learn to be a good friend and better person. When Alex graduates he plans to pursue a career as an Art teacher and open his own small art shop.

On June 14th in a quaint coastal town named Scituate, Massachusetts, a small group of Chamberlain students, led by residential staff, John Buckles arrived to compete in a powerlifting competition.

This group had been training with John Buckles for several months for the Amateur Athletic Union’s Push-Pull-Curl event.  The group consisted of David G., Sam S., Jonathan R. and former student Lexi Z.  This was the first time for Sam and Jonathan but the 6th meet for veteran, David G. who also participated in the A.A.U. World Championship last October and earned himself 2 gold medals.  During this last meet, David deadlifted a personal best of 253 lbs., Sam deadlifted  a personal best of 275 lbs. And Jonathan earned two American records with a deadlift of 353 lbs. and bench press of 141 lbs.  As for John Buckles, he won the strict barbell curl event by curling 138 lbs.  Great job everyone!  We’re so proud of you!

The next A.A.U. Powerlifting event will be in Scituate on August 16th.  Those planning to participate are Leighton K., David G. and Jonathan R.  Leighton’s goal is to bench press 120 lbs., while David would like to deadlift 260 lbs.  Jonathan has set a goal of deadlifting 405 lbs. which will set another record for him if he is successful.  We are all rooting for you!

As many know, the abuse of illicit and prescription drugs is on the rise just as the potency of drugs (both street and legal) increases.  This makes for a very serious problem.  Although an ugly topic to address it is a necessary and vital one.  In response to this reality, Chamberlain School hosted two workshops presented by Marilyn Grifoni Belmonte,  from Drug Abuse Recognition for Communities and the Burlington Drug and Alcohol Task Force.  Ms. Grifoni-Belmonte presented a workshop titled “Teen Drug Abuse:  Can You Read The Signs” to staff on April 18th, to then again to our parents and the local community on May 4th and a workshop titled “The 411 on Drugs” at a student assembly  on May 28th.  Read the rest of this entry »

On June 21, 2008, a warm sunny Saturday, we at Chamberlain lost Kong, faithful companion to Paul Doherty, Systems Engineer, and beloved therapy dog to our students at F.L.C.  Though you wouldn’t have known it when you saw him recently, Kong was in the battle of his life fighting lymphoma.  Sadly Kong lost that battle and left a large vacancy in the world that might never be filled.  We, as a community, grieve for him and wish him peace.  In memoriam to him we share his story:

Kong was a half Chow and half Shepherd (or some similar breed) dog who was originally owned by a member of an area rock band that travelled.  Kong was a roadie and went on tour with them until he contracted heart worm and was given to a Cape Cod animal shelter. The animal shelter sent him to the renowned Angell Memorial Hospital where he was treated and then returned to the shelter to be adopted by Paul and his family.  Read the rest of this entry »
