I am very pleased to announce that Lucille Mutty, M Ed., has been permanently promoted to the role of Program Director.  As many of you are aware, Lucille had served as the Interim Program Director during my recent leave of absence.  Lucille had done an outstanding job in this role.  Her commitment to the students, their families and the development of the program is a true asset to the FL Chamberlain School Community.

Please join me in welcoming her to her new role.  I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work along side her in the future.

Best, Diane Wilson

Habitat for HumanityThe group of 11 students: Loren, Jonathan, Christine, Kaleigh, Erin, Lyra, Kaitlin, Elizabeth, Shawn, Kayla and Tara and 3 faculty members: Jocelyn, Michelle and Greg recently returned from their weeklong trip for Habitat For Humanity.  The students and faculty traveled to Bay St Louis, Mississippi to assist families whose homes were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  The students lodged at a volunteer camp set up and sponsored by LESM, a private relief organization.  The students joined a larger group of students from colleges and other private organizations to assist in the construction of 5 homes for families.  They completed a wide variety of construction related tasks, including framing windows, hanging doors and shutters, painting and attaching baseboards. Habitat for Humanity
In one home, they worked along side the new homeowner as the final finish work was completed.   In addition to the hard work, a little time was carved out for some relaxation and exploring the area.  The students were able to see the beautiful gulf beaches, shop and have a cookout.  While out in the community they received many words of appreciation from area shop owners and local people.

Several students have been attending Open Mic Night at Rick’s Music World in Raynham.  On Thursday nights, local musicians and singer songwriters from around the area perform in front of a live audience.  Our students have been thrilled to be part of this experience.  Congratulations to Josh E who added his name to the list of performers.  Josh performed one original song, as well as, “Beautiful Love” by The Afters.

A Grand Canyon Trip is tentatively scheduled for May 10-14thPlease RSVP to Michelle Hunt no later than April 14th if you are interested in having your child attend.  Our ability to conduct this trip will be dependant on having enough interested students.  The cost of this trip is projected to be approximately $1,100.

A Bermuda Trip is scheduled for June 7th- 14th.  There are currently only four slots remaining on this trip.  Please contact Michelle Hunt if you are interested in having your child attend.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students to study along side world class oceanographers as they study the ocean and ecosystems of Bermuda.  The cost of the trip is $3,000.

Educational Consultant John Powers recently visited the Chamberlain School. John visits periodically to meet with his students so they can offer their perspective on Chamberlain life. Visits like this allow consultants the opportunity to  meet with the students treatment team and provide valuable insight on program effectiveness. We appreciate John’s dedication to his families and working supportively with our school.

Twice a year F L Chamberlain School offers a group of students a truly unique educational experience in Marine Biology and Oceanography. Those students participating in the program begin their studies on the Chamberlain campus prior to their departure to the official overseas territory of Great Britain, – the island of Bermuda. Once on the island, the students along with the staff, stay at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science (BIOS) located in Ferry Reach in the Parish of St. George’s. BIOS was established in 1903 and is one of only a few “blue water oceanographic centers in the world where scientific experiments can be carried out on the ocean and with its inhabitants without the variable of mainland anthropogenic pollutants influencing results”. Here students learn firsthand from the leading experts in Bermuda’s extensive oceanic environment. Read the rest of this entry »
